Accessibility

What is Accessibility?

Accessibility means easy to access and easy to approach, and indicates the extent to which a product, service or solution is available to be used by many users, including seniors and persons with disabilities.

Necessity of Accessibility

Regulations and standards related to accessibility such as U.S. Rehabilitation Act Section 508 and Japan’s JIS X 8341 “Design guidelines for older persons and persons with disabilities” are linked internationally, so considering accessibility has become a prerequisite of manufacturing as local governments stipulate these regulations.
In a development process, required standards must be followed, and the number of users who may not be able to use the product must be minimized by assuming as broad a scope of potential users as possible.

Accessibility at NEC

The NEC Group defines high accessibility as making products, services and solutions accessible to a greater number of users.
The NEC Group strives to create products, systems and websites that take accessibility into account so that a greater number of users can use the products, services and solutions.

Web Accessibility Framework at NEC Group

A JIS standard regarding web content accessibility was stipulated in June 2004 for the first time, and a revised edition was released onMarch, 2016. This JIS standard is generally known as “Web Accessibility JIS” and in response to WCAG 2.0 (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0) becoming an international standard of ISO / IEC, it was revised to be a coincident standard and became JIS X 8341-3: 2016
The NEC Group has established policy based on JIS X 8341-3:2016 and strives to attain and improve accessibility .

  • We started reviewing web accessibility for NEC websites in 2000, created guidelines, and released these guidelines for the NEC Group.
  • When JIS X 8341-3:2004 was released, the guidelines were revised to correspond to JIS X 8341-3:2004. We developed our own web accessibility check diagnosis tools compatible with JIS X 8341-3:2004.
  • When JIS X 8341-3 was revised, we participated in the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee as a member responsible for creating JIS X 8341-3:2010. When JIS X 8341-3:2010 was released, the guidelines were revised to correspond to JIS X 8341-3:2010.
  • After the release of JIS X 8341-3:2010, we participated in WAIC (Web Accessibility Infrastructure Committee).
  • When JIS X 8341-3:2016 was released, the guidelines were revised to correspond to JIS X 8341-3:2016.
